In English, it’s called glutinous rice with braised meat, but no one calls it that. Tong zai mi gao is this deliciously sticky rice served with braised pork on top. It hails from the Qingshui district in Taichung, but it’s readily available throughout the city.
Kung Wo Tofu offers different types of tofu and breakfast dishes, none more popular perhaps than their silken tofu pudding. It’s a popular Chinese snack made with the silkiest tofu and a clear syrup. Tofu pudding isn’t as soft as Yee Shun’s milk pudding but it’s every bit as delicious. Taiwan has a blossoming wine industry, and while many of the winemakers on the island have yet to perfect their craft, one farmer in Taichung has already done so. Shu Sheng winery has won international acclaim for their wines, which they have been producing since 2000. In the last year or so they’ve seen demand for their products hit an all-time high.

It’s a warm and welcoming space where you can wander around the stalls, enjoy coffee or craft beer, feel the vibe of the city. One of Taiwan’s signature dishes is niu rou mian, the classic beef noodles in soup. You can get a savoury bowl of deliciousness almost anywhere in Taiwan. The onigiriin Taiwan has unique ingredients like pork floss, braised pork, grilled pork with green onion, chicken rice, and various types of fish. Speaking of Kaohsiung, though, Zhongxiao Road Night Market reminds me a lot of another famous Kaohsiung Night Market – Guanghua Night Market.
The HSR only runs down the west coast of Taiwan from Taipei to Zuoying . So from Hualien, you can ride a regular train all the way to Taichung, and yes, it takes about 4 hours on the fastest train, the Puyuma Express. This train is the most popular and sells out fastest, so it’s important to buy the ticket as early as possible . Another option is to take the same train but get off in Taipei, then transfer to the HSR for Taipei to Taichung.
An alternative option is alwaystaxis, which are inexpensive but again might be a moderate challenge if you’re operating in English only. Chiayi Metropolitan Park is a great place to do your early morning walk. There are tons of nice little paths that criss-cross the entire area without ever getting too steep.
