I began performing professionally in a Singapore opera troupe in 1967 and have performed at least 50 full-length Cantonese operas, many of which have been staged over and over again. For example, Chinese Theatre Circle's signature opera A Costly Impulse has been staged a dozen times in Singapore as well as in Cairo, Romania, Brazil, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. My favourite operas are Woman Emperor Wu Ze Tian and Women Warriors of the Yang Family. Many of the stories and songs of the Shanghai region show a definite western influence.
The government in 1993 introduced compulsory education, so that the enrollment rate has risen to over 90 percent. However, not all children regularly attend school and complete primary school. The archaic scripts, lumbering plots and piercing Chinese music are indeed alien to the younger audience in this city state of 4 million people, three-fourths of whom are of Chinese ethnicity. I was always powerless to say anything and I have many friends who still are. But times are changing and it is important to be mindful of the difficulties of producing opera while still helping companies see that if we want to diversify our audiences, we need to be aware of the challenges some of our traditional repertory faces. Madame Butterfly may be a mainstay of the Italian operatic canon, but the opera involves a narrative and a tradition that are problematic and hurtful for many members of our community—particularly to members of our Asian American community.
