Nowhere in the Côte de Beaune does the Chardonnay grape do better than it does here. Along the village streets are a succession of little houses belonging to the vineyard workers, mixed with more imposing dwellings. The stone-work on the 53 metre-high church tower looks like it... The 2011 Meursault Village is showing beautifully, offering up a classic bouquet of crisp green orchard fruit, citrus oil, toasted hazelnuts and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and incisive, it's deep and layered at the core, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, penetrating finish. Clearly it is not such a high new oak percentage (around 50%), but given an average 22 months in barrel it is time enough for the oak to flex it’s muscles. A slightly riper and darker fruited nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry and subtle spice and earth nuances. Here too there is excellent richness to the finer if not quite as dense flavors that are shaped by moderately firm tannins on the complex and sneaky long finish. The 2018 Meursault Village Rouge offers copious aromas of red cherry and blueberry fruit, cranberry jus and touches of rose petal.
The most “common” wine from Coche-Dury is his generic Meursault, which is perhaps not quite as generic as one might expect from the table above. There are in total 7-8 different village Meursaults, all vinified and bottled separately. Vinificationen is fairly traditional, but with quite frequent battonage. Fermentation takes place on oak cask, and the proportion of new oak varies from year to year, but generally Coche-Dury uses quite a lot new oak. In some years they have used up to 50% new casks on the top wines. The wines are raised in barral for 15 to 22 months, and are bottled without filtration.
