While little remains of the offices but their foundation stones, these give some indication of Dazaifu’s importance in both the history of Kyushu and Japan. Its Stalinist exterior betrays little of the treasures that are held inside, but for a small price you can see a fantastic collection of Buddhist statues, some of which stand over 5m tall. There are also many relics and some artwork from the 12th century onwards. This museum isn’t listed on the official map but it was a fantastic discovery and well worth a visit. Next to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine at the top of a hill is Kyushu National Museum, another popular spot in the area, not in the spiritual sense as the shrine but with a lot of educational content. A futuristic glass building greets visitors as they reach the top of the hill, with the buildings wavy structure blending smoothly with the outlines of the mountains behind it. After entering the grounds through a large torii gate, a set of three bridges run across a pond filled with koi carp and terrapin turtles. Ancient moss-covered camphor trees are propped up on stilts on the edge of the lake, and the banks are populated by some of the plum trees for which Dazaifu Tenmangu is famous.
