Ukraine has liberated more than 6,000 square kilometers in less than a month, freeing major parts in the North-East and slowly gaining more ground in the South. The 331st's decline can also be measured in loss to machinery as well as personnel - particularly airborne infantry combat vehicles, known by the Russian initials BMD - that have been used up in successive battles. Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said forces with the paramilitary Wagner Group had made progress there. Mr Zelensky has said before that his troops could pull out if they face a threat of encirclement. The war’s front lines have been largely frozen for months, with much of the fighting focused around the city of Bakhmut. Later on Wednesday, at a roundtable of International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings, Mr Zelensky called in a video for a moment of silence for the Ukrainian soldier.
